A Summary for Karma Insurance
<- Back

Plans are currently in progress to reintroduce the red-billed currasow, black-fronted piping guan and 3 species of tinamous.
Reintroductions of mammals, such as golden-headed lion tamarin and red brocket deer might be possible in the future, once a large enough area has been secured for protection.

3. Biodiversity Monitoring and Evaluation
The Reserve is known to support at least 420 bird and 55 mammal species. Due to the remote location of the reserve, much of the biodiversity remains unknown, and so a monitoring programme will be important in identifying other species that live within the Reserve.
This will be achieved using inexpensive methods, such as pitfall traps, camera traps, mist nets and observation walks. Regular monitoring will identify, not only which species are present, but also where they are found and what factors influence their distribution.
For example, if there is a particular plant that they rely on for food. This will be vital in creating a management plan for the area and assessing the impact of the restoration and reintroduction programmes.

4. Education
There is currently an education programme in place that aims to raise awareness of the importance of the natural environment and our dependence on it.
This programme is being implemented in collaboration with the municipal authorities and includes a ‘Schools project’ with local schools, which links the environmental issues with other parts of the education system, and a new project called ‘Young Rangers’, which provides local children with the opportunity to get actively involved with conservation work.
The programme is being extended to the adult community by developing an association of people who live close to the reserve to ensure that they understand the aims of REGUA’s work.

Visit Guapi Assu Reserve
We are hoping to offer organised trips for Karma Insurance Policyholders to the Guapi Assu Reserve so you can see first hand the work which is being done.
The trips would include excursions into the rainforest to view the area, the wildlife and work which is being done. Also at additional cost an excursion to Rio–de–Janiero can be arranged which is 80 kilometers away.
There is resort style accommodation available including swimming pool. The cost will not be cheap but the experience will be unique.
For students we are hoping to arrange a study / working based visit at a substantially reduced cost. The accommodation may be more basic!
If you are interested in receiving information about these visits please email us at guapiassureserve@karmainsurance.com stating how many people, your preferred time of year and your preferred airport for departure (not guaranteed)
